How are 0x Salon events & invitations organised?
0x Salon events rely on active participation from the attendees. Bearing that in mind, we opt to limit the number of people in attendance in order to allow all participants ample opportunity to speak during the two to three hour synchronous discussion. We usually aim for 10-20 people, depending on the type of event and the level of interest.
So far, 0x Salon has hosted three different types of discourse events:
open call salons: anybody can apply to participate, and a limited number of people are selected to attend. If you hear about 0x salon and want to get involved, filling out the Participant Request Form is a great way to start.
semi-closed salons: 0x Salon curates an invite list and invites returning salon colleagues & other selected participants. You’d be most likely hear about these events through private channels if you’ve previously been involved in 0x Salon activities.
co-hosted salons: 0x salon curates a specific invite list with our collaborators. Co-hosts are working on specific research questions and use the salon context to bring together other transdisciplinary colleagues to work through nuanced topics. Participants at these salons have specialised knowledge and professional expertise relevant to the discussion topic.
We recognise that our community is full of wonderful people, and feel profoundly grateful for your continued interest and support. Thank you! However, we haven’t found a straightforward way to bring all of us together for salon-style participatory discussions, especially in the digital milieu. With our 0x Salon discussion events, we try to balance privacy (no recordings allowed / no public screenings), time constraints (everybody leads busy lives outside the salon), and presentness (video call or IRL discussions).
Each 0x Salon event is by its very nature exclusive. Not everybody who wants to attend will be able to attend. That being said, we do our best not to be exclusionary. We are paying heed to the breakdown of participants’ backgrounds to avoid overly monocultural constitutions and always seek to have under-represented voices heard in our conversations. Over the course of a 0x Salon event series, we may hold many discussions on related subtopics under a broad theme. If you miss out on attending one event, there’s a good chance that you’ll be able to participate in another one. The best way to signal your interest is to be a vocal and active participant in our asynchronous discussions on Telegram and Discord.
Ultimately, the decision making process for participant invites is neither completely fair nor fully transparent. The people who are most involved in 0x Salon have the most impact on curating the participant list for our events, and the salon janitors who steward each conversation have the final say.
0x Salon activities go beyond our salon discussion events. 0x Salon is an experimental collective project with multiple tentacular offshoots. Our current endeavors include memetic documentation & production, virtual card games, and an online journal containing event reportage, short articles and poetry. If you would like to be involved in any of these projects, or if you’re interested in leading a foray somewhere new with our support, please reach out ([email protected]). The more involved you are with 0x Salon projects, the more influence you’ll have on our decision-making processes.
Here are some things that 0x Salon janitors look favourably upon:
If you organise the event, you’re guaranteed to be invited. Reach out to us ([email protected]) if you’re interested in co-hosting a 0x Salon event on a specific topic.
Get involved with other 0x Salon projects. Join the conversation in our Telegram group & Discord server (request an invite).
If you’re invited to a salon, try to make the most of your time there by participating actively before, during and after the discussion. It will increase the likelihood of being invited back. Please tell us ahead of time if you have a scheduling conflict or are unable to attend for the whole duration. It helps us allocate invitations to people on the waiting list.
Favouritism and nepotism ;) If you appreciate what the 0x Salon is up to, help us grow our network by introducing us to your colleagues. We like it when salon attendees have thoughtful recommendations about people who we could invite to future 0x Salon events.
Consider all this as ‘incentive’ to get involved in our many projects! We try to make it interesting, fun, hopefully rewarding and you will get full attribution too. In the future, rumours are circulating that the 0x Salon may have opportunities for funded research projects…
